Spiritual Check Engine Light

Around this time each week, I go through a process of deciding what I will preach on the following Sunday.  A couple of hours ago, I outlined a sermon on the theme of the “Check Engine Light” and Jesus.  Giving credit where credit is due, Darwyn Fair, our church lawyer, used this expression last week, the phrase, “Check Engine Light,” and the law.  His point is that life gives us certain indications that we are headed towards a problem, with red flags or check engine lights that pop up to warn us.  Darwyn’s point is that some people heed the warnings, while other’s ignore.  Depending on the reaction to the warning lights, we either avert a more serious situation or we make it worse.  When I heard him say this, I laughed and told him, this Sunday, I am going to preach on this subject!

The outline was initially challenging, because I was stuck on finding a biblical scripture that is exactly similar to the “Check Engine Lights we see after the automobile detects a problem.  The more I thought about it, the “Check Engine lights” of faith actually are more like the owners manual for a car or appliance.  The manual informs us regarding the proper usage of the car or equipment.  If we follow the instructions, with proper usage and care, the equipment should function well. the scripture I have chosen isJohn 8: 12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

I chose this verse, but frankly, there are several other scriptures that just as well could have beeb used, where Jesus teaches in a form that basically says – “If you do this, then you can expect that..”

For example”  Judge not, and you will not be judged, condemn not and you will not be condemned, forgive and you will be forgiven…”  (Matthew 7:1)

I am still developing the sermon, but I think I have enough to preach on this Sunday.  Thanks for reading and I look forward to your thoughts on “The Check Engine Light and Jesus:
