Big Decision Prayer —

Today, I would like to reflect upon big decisions and the process we use to make the best choices. The choice in deciding who you date and possibly marry is a major decision. The decisions we make regarding our education, career and the cities we consider residing is major. The timing regarding when to have a child is major. Choices regarding medical treatment are big decisions. The decision to pack up and move or even changing careers is a big decision. The decision to decide when it is time to take away the car keys from mom or dad is major. Choosing between assisted living, a nursing home or taking your parents into your home is major. Deciding when to draw down upon savings and or investments for a major renovation or purchase is a big set of choices. Choosing what you think are the best options for your child can be difficult.

What I have found is that after all the hand wringing, crying, fears, hopes and dreams, at some point, the person of faith must “Cast their burden on the Lord.” In other words, when you have done the best you can do, asked advice from people and professionals you have confidence, at the end of the day, we who believe must lay the burden at the feet of Jesus and trust that he will guide us in the best path.

At the critical stages of my life, I have always “Cast my burden on the Lord.” While I do not always have the answer, the Lord has never left me without a witness. Neither, has the Lord ever left me without an answer, a clear direction from which I can move forward. I share this word with you this day – trust the Lord, live in the Lord, make your decisions in the Lord, and Jesus will guide you, inspire you and show you what you must do.

Psalm 55: 22 Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. [1]

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What process to you use to include God in your major decisions?
  2. When making a big decision, what Bible verses have given you the most strength and guidance?

Prayer: God, I need your help. I have a major decision to make and I need your guidance. The choices are clear, but the outcome is less clear. Open the portals to my thought process and expand my power to reason. While I may have doubts about human beings and their advice, in you, I have total confidence. My trust is in you. Spread my wings and grant me the strength to fly on my own. In you, I know there is power and deliverance. Lord, today I seek not just your inspiration, but also your direction. Make me brave for the battle before me. Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior I pray. Amen.
