Abundant Life in Jesus Christ – Life Free from Worry-

20170615_114029

For three Tuesdays in July, I will be sharing my thoughts in a backyard, informal Bible discussion on various aspects of “Abundant Life” in Jesus Christ. Tuesday, July 11, we will look at Jesus words in John 10:10 “I come that you might have life, more abundantly.” It is difficult to attain abundant life when you are always worried. Jesus has promised to address our fears, take away our concerns and prepared for us optimal life. The following week we will look at what Jesus says about worry over the material things in life:

Matthew 6: 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? 28 And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

34 “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

To me, the primary point Jesus is making is that God is the creator of the world and universe and knows all the intimate details of our lives. Jesus continues by saying (paraphrasing) that “If God, who has created the lilies of the field and birds of the air, cares for these animals and vegetation, surely, God cares for you.” Are you carrying burdens you do need? I encourage you to cast your burdens on the Lord. His yoke is easy and burden is light. If we seek Jesus first, and strive to follow his will, the promise of God is that the reward of our faith is peace, joy and happiness.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. In what ways does Jesus Christ offer those who believe in him a life free from worry?
  2. What are your thoughts regarding Jesus words about being anxious in Matthew 6: 25-33

Prayer: Lord, show me how to handle worry, stress and anxiety. Grant me a calm spirit. Grant me an even spirit. Grant me the understanding to know what things to focus on and those things to let go. Lift me up with your presence. Inform me with your Holy Spirit. Shower me with your peace. Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior I pray. Amen.
