This Thursday, I will deliver a eulogy for a good friend, John Reeves. The title of my eulogy is called, “A Prince and a Great Man has Fallen this Day!” John was a good friend and strong supporter and member of the church that I pastor. Today, I would like to share with you where this expression is found in the Bible. It is found in the David stories, located in 2 Samuel 3:38:

2 Samuel 3: 38 And the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel? [1]

Let me provide you with a little background about this text. Abner is the commander of King Saul’s army. Joab is the commander of David’s army. David and Saul keep fighting each other, but David is winning more than Saul. Eventually, Abner, Saul’s commander comes to David with only 20 men and they pledge allegiance to David. David prepares a feast for Abner and his men. After dinner, Abner and his men return in peace. When Joab, the commander of David’s army finds out that his nemesis in battle has come to David in peace, he is livid!

Joab is seething because sometime earlier, in the heat of battle, Abner killed one of his brothers. Joab wants revenge, so he pretends to come in peace and when Abner is not looking, Joab stabs him.

David is really upset that Joab has killed Abner, especially because Abner had come in peace. To demonstrate to all who were near, David sobs and the death of Abner and says, 38 “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel? 39 [2]

Questions for Reflection:

  1. Why do you think David referred to Abner as a “Prince and a great man?”
  2. What are the requirements for a person to be described as a great person?

Prayer: Lord, grant me the wisdom to recognize greatness. Lord, bless me to acknowledge greatness. Lord, teach me to honor greatness. May I strive for greatness in all I do and all I think. Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior I pray. Amen.
