Jesus and Hot Sauce –

Yesterday, I wrote about Mary Magdalene and the other Mary seeing Jesus in the cemetery. The stone was rolled away from the tomb. An angel sat on top of the stone and the women were scared almost to death. Jesus met the women and told them to tell the disciples to meet him in Galilee.

Galilee was home. Galilee was 76 miles away from the hate and confusion Jesus experienced in Jerusalem. While by the Sea of Galilee, the disciples went fishing. When they came ashore the saw a charcoal fire with fish and bread. Jesus asked them to bring some of the fish they had just caught.

Think for a moment what is happening? Jesus is preparing breakfast for the disciples. John says they knew it was Jesus. Why do you think they knew it was Jesus? I think it may have been the hot sauce. Hot sauce? I know someone reading this is saying, but Rev. Hood, I never read about hot sauce in the Gospel accounts of the post resurrection ministry of Jesus. My feeling is that there was something about the way Jesus cooked the meal and served the meal that let the disciples know it was the Lord. Being a person of color, among disciples of color, I suspect that Jesus threw a little spice into the sauce to pick up the meal. Maybe so, maybe not, but there was something about that fish that let them know it was Jesus.

Jesus was not too big to stoop down and serve the disciples. Who are you willing to serve as Jesus served the disciples?

John 21: 9 When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord[1]

Questions for Reflection:

  1. Why do you think Jesus prepared breakfast for the 11 disciples?
  2. What was it about breakfast that enabled the disciples to know it was Jesus on the shore?

 

Prayer: Draw me closer, Lord, draw me closer. When I do not understand people and things, be my inspiration and understanding. Help me to enjoy the simple things of life and draw me deeper in faith, hope and love. Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior I pray. Amen.
