Remember Your Creator in the Days of Your Youth

Plymouth United Church of Christ Black College Tour, Virginia Breach  1978-1980?

The photo at the top of this post is from an early “Black College Tour” that was sponsored by my church.  At the time I was the assistant minister and one of my responsibilities was the youth ministry.  This particular youth ministry was a high school youth ministry.  We had visited Howard University and Hampton Institute.  The year was somewhere between 1978 and 1980.  I took this photo as we refreshed ourselves at Virginia Beach.  I just found these photos and had them transferred to a digital format.  One of the things that struck me was the joy and innocence of youth.  The young people seemed so happy, so joyful and full of life.  As I look at this photo I think about the words from the Book of Ecclesiastes…

Ecclesiastes 12 Remember your creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come, and the years draw near when you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”;[1]

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What are some of the biggest challenges in “Remembering your creator in the days of your youth?
  2. How does the faith we obtain in our youth sustain us in our old age?

Prayer:

Lord, bless our youth with a faith that can move mountains.  Bless our young adults to believe in you, even as they follow their hopes, dreams and aspirations.  Speak to us through your Holy Spirit.  Lead us. Guide us. Protect them. Bless us with your love.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior we pray.  Amen.
