Yours is the Day, yours is the Night

When I see the setting sun and look out over the Detroit River in the middle of winter, I think about the majesty of God’s good earth. God has created a world far more wonderful, far more complex, far more unique than anything human beings could ever create. Our good earth is neither too hot nor too cold for life to exist. A few degrees warmer or colder would make life as we know it impossible. The rotation of the sun and moon with each of the stars and planets in their orbits around the sun make life possible. We have water to sustain us and water that makes for the very nature of life.

So, today I encourage you to pause for a moment and take stock of the blessings you enjoy as a human being. Thank the Lord for the day. Thank the Lord for the night. Thank the Lord for the temperature of the earth. Thank the Lord for the goodness of the land that provides us with nourishment and the essence of life. Thank the Lord that you have the opportunity to live right now on this good earth.

Psalm 74: 16 Yours is the day, yours also the night; you established the luminaries and the sun. [1]

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What are your thoughts about the amazing, unique, nature of God’s creation of the earth and universe?
  2. How do you see yourself in the context of the world and universe in which we live?

Jesus, you are Lord of the day and Lord of the night. Lord, your universe is more amazing and unique than anything the human mind could conceive. From the empty darkness of space you have created separated the heavens and earth. You have created water and land, day and night, winter, spring, summer and fall. This good earth is neither too hot nor too cold. We are close enough to the sun to be warm, but not so hot that the earth could not sustain life. You have provided the inhabitants of life with intelligence to form solutions to our problems, the strength to make life habitable, and the spirit of love to make life fresh, exciting and ever evolving. Lord, you have made the day and Lord, you make the night. Teach me to appreciate every aspect of life. Lord, I thank you for the world you have established. Lord, I thank you for the privilege of life at this point in the history of the universe. Lord, you are more amazing than anything I can imagine. Lord, you are more wonderful, more gracious, more merciful and more redemptive and loving than anything the human mind could construct. I thank you for life. I thank you for your salvation. Through Jesus Christ our Lord and savior I pray. Amen.
