Greece – Rome 2015 Trip log – Day one
September 14, 2015
Sunday, September 13, 2015 fifty- five persons, including myself and my wife, Denise, boarded a jet plane for Athens, Greece. The name for this trip is, “Following in the Footsteps of the Apostle Paul.” The itinerary is of great interest to be because it centers on several of the places the Apostle Paul preached, taught, lived and died. Although the Apostle Paul also ministered in Syria and large parts of what is now, Turkey, and Asia Minor, I am really looking forward to this trip to help me get a better sense of the road Paul traveled. Our itinerary includes visiting the site of ancient Philippi, Corinth, Thessaloniki and Rome where Paul preached and died.
After a full night of travel that began Sunday night, Monday mid-day we landed in Amsterdam, Netherlands to connect with the second leg of the trip that took us into Athens, Greece. We finally landed in Athens, Monday afternoon. The time change has me all turned around, but it has been a good day.
Today, we checked into the Athens, Hilton Hotel, which is first rate, with all of the amenities. Several of our travel ministry partners have volunteered to serve as “Tour Ambassadors.” Their role is to look out for persons who need assistance as well as to provide fun and entertainment at night. The Tour Ambassadors are also assisting the professional Tour Guides in making sure we keep up with all of the persons who are traveling with us. Our group walked across the street and up a block to a restaurant for dinner. After dinner, several persons headed back to the hotel while seventeen of us took a walking tour of ancient Athens that provided us with breathtaking views of the Acropolis lit up at night. Our route included walking to the subway station, taking two trains and ending up in an area where we had great views of the Acropolis.
It is now night time and pushing midnight. I hope you will check the church website over the next week and each day I will provide you with my take on how the Greece-Rome Trip is going.
Unlike the other trips we have taken as a church, this trip will take on a deeper spiritual significance because for many of the sites of Christian historical significance, we will pause to read appropriate scriptures from the Bible that directly relate to what we are experiencing. Thanks again for walking this walk with our Travel Ministry.
