All Your Children Shall be Taught by the Lord
Yesterday I performed a wedding. During the wedding reception I saw something I have never seen before. The grandmother of the bride stood up to make a toast to the newlyweds. As she began her remarks she looked around the room and said she and her husband had sixteen grandchildren. She then said that she and her husband had stressed five principals for their children and the children of their children to base their lives upon. She looked over her shoulder and asked the youngest grandchild in the room to stand up and recite the five important principals of live. On cue and with no prepping, the youngest grandchild in the room, who was a girl stood up and began to recite the five principals. I don’t remember all of them, neither do I recall the order, but some of them were family, discipline and love. As the young granddaughter made her recitation, I leaned over to the bride and asked her if she too knew the five principals? She smiled and said, “Yes.” She also told me that all of the children and grandchildren grew up with these five principals drilled into their brains. I thought the whole concept of a family having guiding principles to pass down from generation to generation was terrific.
Some families only pass mess from generation to generation. The family I saw last night stressed quality values and principals. It is not surprising that this family has produced over five doctors and dentists and every member of the family seems to be a productive member of society.
As I listened to the granddaughter recite her family principals, I thought of the Prophet Isaiah and his words about children and thought about how important it is for children to have role models of faith:
Isaiah 54: 13 All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the prosperity of your children.
Lord, bless the children. Bless the children with parents who not only love them, but train them in the way they shall go. Bless the children that they might be taught the ways of the Lord: to learn of his truth, his mercy, his grace and his love. Bless the children, Lord that they might prosper all the days of their lives. Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior we pray. Amen.
